1. Locate your pulse
Gently find your pulse by pressing your index and middle fingers slightly toward the inner center of your elbow's bend. This is where the brachial artery's pulse can be felt. If you struggle to find it, position the stethoscope's head (for manual monitoring) or the arm cuff (for digital use) in this general vicinity.
2. Secure the cuff
Slide the cuff's end through the metal loop, then swiftly position it on your arm, ensuring the stethoscope head is placed above the artery when using a manual monitor. Look for an arrow on the cuff indicating the stethoscope head's placement. The cuff's lower edge should be approximately one inch above your elbow's bend. Fasten the cuff snugly, ensuring it's comfortable but not overly tight.
Insert the stethoscope into your ears, tilting the ear pieces slightly forward for optimal sound clarity.
3. Inflate and deflate the cuff
Grasp the pressure gauge with your left hand and hold the bulb with your right, as illustrated to the right.
Securely close the airflow valve on the bulb by turning the screw in a clockwise direction.
Begin inflating the cuff by squeezing the bulb with your right hand. You might hear your pulse faintly through the stethoscope.
Monitor the gauge closely. Continue inflating until it reaches roughly 30 points (mm Hg) above your expected systolic pressure, ensuring no pulse is audible through the stethoscope by this point.
While keeping your eyes on the gauge, gently release the cuff pressure by gradually turning the airflow valve counterclockwise. The gauge should decrease by only 2 to 3 points per heartbeat. Practicing a slow turn of the valve may be necessary.
Listen attentively for the initial pulse beat. Once heard, immediately note the gauge reading, as it represents your systolic pressure.
Continue to gently deflate the cuff.
Listen intently until the pulse sound fades away. As soon as the sound ceases, record the gauge reading, which signifies your diastolic pressure.
Ensure the cuff deflates entirely.
IMPORTANT: Should you release the pressure too swiftly or fail to hear your pulse, refrain from immediately reinflating the cuff. Instead, wait a minute before attempting the measurement again, commencing by reapplying the cuff.
